How do brokers estimate a used boat’s price?
Brokers start from comparable boats: the same make and model, a similar year and specification, currently for sale or recently sold. They then adjust for engine hours, condition, equipment, refits, VAT status and where the boat is located. The result is a price range, and the broker recommends an asking price within it.
Comparables come first because buyers compare too: a boat priced well above its sisterships sits on the market.
Engine hours matter most on motor boats. High hours for the age lower the value; a documented engine overhaul can offset them.
Condition and equipment are what separate two boats of the same year: teak, sails, electronics, generator, watermaker and recent antifouling all count.
Location and VAT change the buyer pool. A VAT-paid boat in a busy Mediterranean market is not priced like the same model lying inland without paperwork.
How does this free boat valuation tool work?
It finds active listings of the same make and model on the EasyMLS network, moves each one to your boat’s year using the depreciation curve below, and adjusts for engine hours. How accurate is an online boat valuation?
It is a good starting point when there are several comparable listings, and less reliable for rare or custom boats. It cannot see condition, so a survey or a broker’s inspection is still needed before you set a final price.
Is the estimate an asking price or a sale price?
It is based on asking prices of boats currently for sale. Final sale prices are often a little lower after negotiation, depending on the market and the boat’s condition.
What affects a used boat’s value the most?
Make and model, age, engine hours, condition, equipment, VAT status and location, roughly in that order. Recent refits and maintenance records also help.
